THE FACULTY SENATE

Welcome Letter from the Faculty Senate President

November 20, 2020

Greetings Faculty,

Welcome to the Harris-Stowe State University Faculty Senate webpage.

First, I would like to thank each of you for your ongoing demonstration of a strong commitment to the success of our students and the University during the COVID-19 pandemic.  This has certainly been a testimony to our HSSU fortitude as we also work to care for families, friends and community.

The mission of the Faculty Senate is to lead faculty in fulfilling their responsibilities in the shared governance of the University and to represent faculty interests to the University and community stakeholders. The system of shared governance provides faculty, operating through the Faculty Senate, a voice in the operation of the University.  Shared governance also imposes on faculty a shared responsibility for the manner in which the University operates.  The Faculty Senate strives to work in collaboration with the Board of Regents, President Corey Bradford, and Administration for the continuous growth and improvement of Harris-Stowe State University.

Faculty participation in the shared governance of the University, through the agency of the Faculty Senate, is a guiding force that supports a uniform standard of excellence for students, faculty, and professional staff.  The responsibilities of the Faculty Senate include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. ensuring that academic freedom is encouraged and protected;
  2. informing faculty about university policies, procedures, and substantive changes made by the administration;
  3. making recommendations to faculty and administration on policies to improve the teaching and learning experience;
  4. participating in the review and implementation of the strategic plan of the university;
  5. contribute to the continuous improvement of the University
  6. overseeing curriculum development that promotes student learning in alignment with identified university student learning goals and outcomes;

The Faculty Senate’s participatory role in shared governance is most effective when the faculty, as a unified body, is involved.  I strongly encourage you to be actively involved in the Faculty Senate.  Knowing your College Senators and faculty representatives on the various Standing Committees is the first step. Attend monthly Faculty Senate meetings.  Share in collegial conversations.  Exercise your right and responsibility to contribute to successful shared governance at Harris-Stowe State University.

Come back often to visit the Faculty Senate website where you will find valuable information including notification of meetings and deliberations of the Faculty Senate and Standing Committees.

I look forward to seeing you at our next Faculty Senate Meeting.

Take Care and Be Safe.
